Ohio’s casinos, racinos break a record with $218 M of revenue in March

(Cleveland).- Ohio’s casinos and racinos brought another record for revenue in March, breaking a monthly record for the third time in three months. The state’s 11 casinos and racinos had $217.7 million of gambling revenue in March, according to reports from Ohio’s Casino and Lottery commissions, surpassing the $216.3 million record set in March 2022. These totals exclude money bet on sports and at the horse tracks.
The state’s four casinos and seven racinos have brought in a combined $611.6 million in revenue in the first three months of 2023. At this time in 2022, the gambling establishments had just $566.4 million in revenue, and went on to break a yearly record.
Ohio’s total gambling revenue has increased each year since 2012, when the first casino opened — excluding 2020, a year plagued by pandemic-related shutdowns.
Gambling revenue is the money kept by the gambling houses, after paying out winnings, but before state taxes and fees.
The four casinos, which can offer slot machines and table games like blackjack, brought in $95 million, up from the $93.3 million made last March. The state’s seven racinos, the gambling houses at horse racetracks that can only offer slot machines, brought in $122.7 million, just about breaking even compared to 2022.
Newly legal sports betting, which is counted separately from casino and racino revenue, could be helping by driving patrons to visit gambling establishments. Each casino and racino also has a physical sportsbook.
In the Greater Cleveland market, March revenue was:
* $26.4 million at MGM Northfield Park, up from $26.1 million in March 2022.
* $16.7 million at JACK Thistledown Racino, down from $17.7 million.
* $24.4 million at JACK Casino Cleveland, about even compared to the $24.5 million last March.
